In the Houso of Lords, the Naval and Military War Pensions Bill, to which strong objection is taken on account of the Government rushing sal important a..measure, was discussed. i'lio main opposition centres on the proposal to create a new statutory body, wit'li many new officials, to administer, the pensions. Tho Marquis of Crewe pointed oub the urgency of tlie measure otherwise. Ho said that unless machinery wera piovided, the supplementary disable-, ment benefits could not be paid. Lord Balfour of Burleigh said that the provision to meet tile difficulties were singularly inadequate.. Complete separation slionld.be made between permanent pensions ami separation allowances. Ho moved adjournment until after the recess. Lord Lansdowne' pleaded that the House should not bring the machinery to a standstill. Ho believed the policy was universally approved by the country. Lord Middleton, who.is,a member,o£ tho Departmental Retrenchment Conw mittee, said he did iiot desire to reject, but earnestly desired to recast, the Bill. The adjournment was carried by 44' votes to 31. Lord Newton said that'the'payments to tho dependents of, married, .soldiers totalled £750,000. weekly, ,-yho War Office did not desire to recruit married men, but tbe fact that Parliament was treating the dependents of married men with greater generosity had served as ai special inducement. ::
