PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
A meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society was held at the Dominion Museum last night. Mr. T. King presided at 0110 of the most interesting evenings tho socioty has had for some timo past. An address was delivered by Dr.. J. M. Mason, entitled "A Few Minutes With Microbes." The lccture, which was illustrated with lantern slides, was listened to with ■ tho greatest interest, and at its conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Mason.
A number of kincmatograph films of scientific subjects were exhibited by Mr. J. M'Donald. Probably tho most interesting of theso ivas quite a remarkpicture, "Radiography in Practice. 1 Other pictures shown included ''Tho Magnesia Industry," and films, tho property of tho Agricultural Department, illustrating New Zealand industries. Tlio first-mentioned films were lent by the Now Zealand Picture Supplies Company,
A meeting was held ill Esperanto Hall on Tuesday evening representing' various Women's Societies in the city, to further the movement for the releaso pf Alice May Parkinson, who was sentenced in June to imprisonment for the teiin of har natural life. The meeting was unanimous in condemnation of the Sentence. Mrs. Rae, president of the Housewives' Union (under whose auspices the meeting had been called), presided. A committee, consisting of the following, was formed to organise a big public meetingMesdames Rae, Fitzmaurictj, Moore, M'Mann, Mnlcaliy, Cavell, Gallichan, Aitkens, Tliomas, Fletcher, Marmot, M'lnerary, Tutecika, Snow, Donaldson, Wahren, Hickey, and Nisbet, and Messrs. Strickney and Rae. Mrs. Donaldson was appointed secretary, and Mrs. Fitzmaurice treasurer. Financial assistance was promised in tliq name of the societies' represented. The engagement is announced of Miss Etliel F. Anderson, only daughter of Mrs. Ewart .Anderson, Masterton, to Mr. W. Campbell, superintendent locomotives, Nortli-East- Railway, Argentine, eldest son of the lato' Dr. R. Campbell, Park' Settlement, West Indies. The drawing of the art union for two oil, paintings, one by Mr. Lawson and the other by Mr. Montgomery, takes place in the Mayor's room of the Town Hall at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Mrs. Salek (The Terrace) has been responsible for the art union, and the funds are to assist with the supply of comforts and. extras for the soldiers from Trentham who are in hospital.
