THE PRESENT POSITION. j fly Telegraph—Press Association—Conyri^lrt London, July 26. '*r Marconi, at a .meeting of the i Marconi Company, stated that owing to - the war the Postmaster-General had i cancelled the scheme for tho "Imperial l Chain." Negotiations were < recommenced with the Government in February to erect certain stations upon conditions differing from those of the original scheme, and these were proceeding on a. reasonably equivalent basis. Mr. Isaacs stated that owing to the German Government's support of a German scheme, the Marconi Company had appealed to Sir Edward Grey, who t thenceforward- supported their .negotiations abroad. Tho company was now in a preponderating position'throughout tho world. Mr. Isaacs added that although the s irar ultimatum did not expire, until mid--0 night, Germany, at 5 o'clock on the 3 afternoon of Auugst 4, sent- wireless 1 messages all over the world, saying . that war had been declared, and th,at vessels should'make for a neutral port '■ as quickly as possible. She thus saved ■ a great part of her mercantilo marine. ■ Germany had' spent two millions upon these wireless stations, but was recouped by saving a single one of her. largest ■steamers.
