NOTES AND COMMENTS
[BT Gmncoe."!
.The locally-owned Plunder has been acquitting herself remarkably welL on tho Trcnthnin tracks of late. Ono morning last week she accounted for Undecided in a gallop over a mile. This showing should bo good enough to ensuro for her plenty of support in the big handicap at Pahiatua to-day. W.' Bell is to havo tho mount on tho Achilles mare. Had he been disposed to sell Tim Doolim, tho Canterbury owner, Mr. G. L. Stead, could havo secured a big price for tho Brookby gelding while on his recent visit to Melbourne. Gienroy, who i 9 one of tho short-priced division for the Winter Cup, will be seen under silk.in the Koniui Handicap, five furlongs, at Pahiatua to-day. He is" to be ridden by A. Oliver and a victory for him will not mean any increased poundage for tho big mile at Kicearton. Ono of the items of interest at Pahiatua to-day will be tho appearance- of Multiply in the role of a hurdler. Tho Cup winner has a big weight and as it is his first appearance in a jumping race it will be no surprise to see him "defeated, notwithstanding the reports as to . his jumping abilities. • A win at Pahiatua would not entail a penalty for tho Nation/,! Hurdles, but, if he gets beaten to-day, his owner may elect to give hiin a run in the Trial Hurdles at Riccarton. The winner of this' latter event will have to put up a lib. penalty. However, this would bo as nothing compared with tho ainount of good a public schooling would do him. Bransfield, who has an engagement in the Grand National Steeplechase, will lriake -his firet public appearance as a steeplechaser in the Hack and Hunters' event at the Pahiatua meeting. He has been well schooled over the big fences at Opaki and those who have seen him working declare him to be one of tho best young horses of the season. In to-day's race he will be ridden by E. Gray. On July 17 the V.R.C. Committee agreed to the following resolution"On and after August 1 next no horse blind in .one eye shall be eligible to be entered for any race (either Hat or jumping) run at lUcmington racecourse." A similar rule operates at Caulfield and Kandwick. Word comes from India that the Army Cup, usually run at tho Lucknow Autumn Meeting, has again been abandoned this year. With most of India's sporting officers at the front, this was only to be expected. Mr. Harry Palmer, who has been nominated for one of the North Island seats' on the New Zealand Trotting Association, is a vice-president of the Hutt . Valley Club, and one of tho most popular sportsmen in the district. He has had <i long connection with racing, and lias also identified with' football, cricket, and many other outdoor sports. The Victorian jockey, J. Killorn, has appealed against his disqualification by the stipendiary stewards. Tho appeal was to have been heard on Friday last. Meritus, the half-brother (by Positano) to Lady Medallist, is to be raffled in Melbourne for tho patriotic funds. Tho Victoria Racing Club will,-at the annual meeting of members, consider a proposal to devote tho whole of. tho profits to the patriotic funds until the end of tho war. Among the winners in Sydney on July 17 was the New. Zealand-bred Morse Code (Sarto—Olivine). Divided. handicaps, which are so greatly favoured in Melbourno, may;'shortly come into force in Sydney. The trainers in Sydney aro pressing tho proprietary "horse" clubs to adopt this system of handicapping.-'
