NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE
The executive of the New Zealand Alliance at its meeting on Monday evening heartily congratulated the W.C.T.U. on its vigorous campaign for the early closing of liquor bars. Gratification was expressed at the fact that Mr. J. M'Combs, M.P., had proposed an amendment to tho Shops and Offices' Bill in tho direction of bringing liquor bars under that Act, so far as hours for salo aro concerned, namely, that tho bars should close at 6 p.ui. on five days in and at 1 p.m. on tho halfholiday, whichever day that is. It was that .the time had come for economic and industrial reasons as well as for social and moral ones, that the liquor traffic should not continue to have unexampled privileges, which proved so costly to society. Information .was received that the AVcstland Licensing Coiumittco had, following tho example of tho Grey Committee, granted transfers to places more than a mile away, and" tho Allianco Executive therefore resolved not only to protest, but to seek legislation that would for ever prevent the ©v'asiou of tho law on that point. Tho meeting' expressed appreciation of' tho efforts put forth by Messrs. L. M. Isitt, It. A. Wright, C. 11. Poole, J. M'Combs, J. Hanan, A. H. Hindmarsh, and Dr. Newman's, M.P.'s, to secure complete prohibition for Niuo in the Cook Island Bill, in response to the appeal of tho Natives on the island..
