'ARRIVAL OF THE OANASTOTA. DAMAGE BY lt-EOENT FIEE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland. My it Tile U.S. and A. Lino's steamer Canastota, arrived from New York, via Panama, this morniuf. While at New York, at the end of Apnl, a bad fire hrolto out in the 'tween decks, in the t>vo forward holds. All the cargo there was destroyed. The holds had to be completely Hooded. The cargo destroyed was for Australian and New Zealand ports. It included six motorcare. The iron decks' -were buckled by the heat, and beams were twisted and had to bo renewed. The vessel was docked for three weeks. A genral average ol 20 per ccnt. was strncli on the lines affected. B.M.S. COEINTHHJ FOE. LONDON. Arrangements hove been made to dispatch It.M.S. Oorinthic from Wellington for London at 3 p.m. on Monday August 9. MARAMA LEAVES 'FRISCO. The local offico of the "Union Company has been advised that the Mar-ama cleared Sau Francisco for Wellington-, via Papeete end ltorotonga, on Thursday, July 22—one day late. She is due here on August 13, and after landing about BCO tons of cargo will proceed on to Sydney. Leaving San Francisco the Marama had 30 first, 60 second, 62.third-class passengers on board. It is stated the mails from England failed .to connect with the Maa-ama. CANASTOTA DUE SATURDAY. Having arrived at Auckland from New York, via Panama Canal last Monday, the U.S. and A. Line's steamer Canastota will arrive at Wellington on Saturday, July 31. ' THE FERRY SERVICE. On account of the slight mishap to her machinery the Monowai was late in arriving at Wellington from Lyttelton yesterday; She did not berth till 12.15 p.m. It has been dccided to effect repairs at Wellington, and consequently the Manuka, acted as ferry. steamer to Lyttelton last evening. The Manuka and Victoria will leave the southern port for Wellington this, evening. It is expected that tile Monowai will be able to resume running in ' the ferry service to-morrow evening as usual. POET. PHILLIP FROM NEW YORK. Froni New York, via, Panama Canal, the C. ami D. liner Port Phillip made Wellington Harbour during the early hours of yesterday morning. Subsequently sho berthed at the King's Wharf to land about 3000, tons of cargo for Now Zealand. The Port Phillip left New York on June 6, and was held up in the Panama Oanal by a landslide in the Gaillard (formerly Oulebra) Cut for over three days. Pitr cairn Island was visited on July 13. Exceptionally heavy weather was experienced from the latter. place to New Ze&land. Deck fittings were smashed, firemen's quarters flooded, and a considerable amount of damage done generally. Captain. Mr. A. Hope-Robertson, third officer of tlie : Maori, is about to resign from the TJnion Company's service, in order to join the Navy.

In connection with the new steamship service from New York,. established by Messrs. Barber and Oo„ further sailings after the Ohalister, now en route, are announcd. It is proposed to dispatch a steamer at the beginning of each month, and the schedule as now arranged calls for the sailing of tho Themis on August 1, Tcllus on September 1, Wagami on October 1, and Storstad on November 1. All these vessels, are of large capacity, some of them having been engaged in the St. Lawrence trade. - ■

From Waitara the F. and S. chartered steamer La Blanca. will arrive ' at Wellington on Friday next to fill up boforo sailing for Avonmouth, via Durban, at the beginning of next week.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's Tongariro, which left Wellington for London on. .Saturday last took tho following cargo from this p0rt:—19,451 carcasses and 30,008' legs mutton, 3390 carcasses lamb, ICCO quarters beef, 24 casks pelts, 818 bales wool, 34 casks tallow, 162 sacks peas, 719 bales homp, and 24 cases sundries.
