A Farewell to a Soldier. The Misses Tuckwell invited the members of the Tamua Golf Club to the golf-house. to bid farewell to Mr. Gordon . Smith, who is leaving to join tho Reinforcements. Quite a number came to do honour to Mr. Smith, including visitors from Pahiatua and Eketahuna. Perfect weather prevailed, and many took ad vantage of the links, which were in good order, to play. De-licious'afternoon-tea was served in the golf-house, and was much appreciated. Sir. Carruthers (captain of the club) asked - Mr. Smith to. accept the best wishes of tW nienibers. also a, spirit fiask frQiu the Misses Tuckwell, as a memento" of the occasion. Mr. Smith thanked tho members-,for .their kind wishes, also the Misses Tuckwell for their gift. Cheers were given for the guest and the hostesses. The first games in what is believed to bo the first'ladies' billiard championship yet held- in New Zealand were played in Messrs. Alcock and Cb.'s showrooms last night. It is not certain, and inquiry is being made upon the point;- but it is thought that the present games aro the first of the kind to be contested in the world. At any rate, special interest attaches .to the Alcock ladies' billiard championship, and the enthusiasm of the contestants is evidence of the advancement tha game has made among members of the gentler sex. The result of the six games played were:—Mrs. Wat-kins beat Miss 0. Stacej'Mrs. Girdlestone beat Mrs. Kilminster; Mrs. Chant'beat Mrs. Player ; Mrs., Nagel beat Mrs. Lockwood; Mrs. Nagel also beat Mrs. Porter; Mrs. Tucker beat Miss E. Stevens; a)id Miss Penman beat Mrs, Watkins.

To-night six games will be played, including the finals, and the ladies aro expected to give a .fine exhibition of the game. • • Men are invited to witness the contests, which commence at 7 p.m., hut it is a condition that -they must be accompanied by a lady. The prizes won in the handicap recently completed will, with the championship cup, be presented to-night.

Miss Davis, who for over seven years past has been matron .of ,the Pahiatua District Hospital, and has received an appointment as matron of the Ashburton Hospital; was publicly farowellecf yesterday., There was a large and representative gathering, and the Mayor presented Miss Davis with a gold watch. Speeches were made by-the local doo-' tors, also by members of the Wiiirarapa Hospital Board. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Warburton, who have let their house, have removed,to 102 The Terrace.

At the'invitation of Miss M'Kegg's Monawatu Committee, a performance of the' Coronation of the Queen was given in. Levin- on' Friday evening last. The Queen, with about ten of her maids of honour, Professor Cardston, Mr. Meredith, the pages, heralds, etc., journeyed to Levin, and met with a very enthusiastic reception. The hall was crowded to the doors, and the stately procession. of the Queen and her ladies-in-waiting, the effective grouping of the performers, and the rich colour effects of the beautiful .dresses were appreciated. The bestowing of honours upon various' well-known residents of the Levin district probably caused the greatest enjoyment. ■ After the performance the visitor®• were entertained, at supper, and were the committee's guests, at the Grand Hotel till the next day, when they returned to Wellington* The proceeds go to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund.

New Zealand Natives' Association. A meeting of the Ladies' Guild' of the New Zealand Natives' • Association was held in tlie Natives' Hall in Tory Street yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of members, presided over by Mrs. M'Vicar, and keen interest was taken in the proceedings by all present. The reports from the four sub-committees wero received and dealt with, and further members were added to their numbers. Tickets were issued to idontifv members when they visit the various hospitals in which sick and- wounded soldiers are' stationed, and, in passing, it' might boremark 7 ed that all such visiting will bo done during 'the stated visiting hours of .these institutions. Badges of black' ribbon, embroidered- with a silver fern leaf, are also to be handed out to members of the association. ; By these means hospital visitors, representing the society, will .become . more ' clearly associated with tho special work they lave undertaken. A department of their work that has already met with much appreciation on tho part of Tejlatives of the invalided . soldiers, not jiecossarily the ones who have returned from the front, is tho Inquiries Bureau, several letters having been . received from country districts, and even from Auckland, containing inquiries from relatives as to the progress made by men who have become ill while in camp here.

. The Wellington Girls' College is hold-; ing a 'grand demonstration of Swedish gymnastics, games, , and Old English dances next .Friday and Saturday evenings in the Concert' Chamber of tho Town Hall.. The "demonstration, which is being arranged by Miss Constanco Smith, games mistress of the college, promises to be most attractive. , An interesting feature of tho programme will he the Goblin danco, an entirely original dance arranged by Miss Smith. Home-made sweets will bo sold in tho hall; The proceeds are to be dovoted to the Wounded Soldiers' and.Sailors' Fund.
