The streets were thronged and ' gaily decorated. : Tho Mayor, in receiving General Botha, said tho people wero filled with thankfulness and admiration at the way, General Botha's troops had carried out the campaign. To his brilliant strategy, persistent energy, noble chivalry,, and wise moderation 111 the hour of victory, was duo the bloodlessness of the campaign. PRESENTED WITH A SWORD. THE GENERAL'S SIMPLE SPEECH, (Rec. July 23, 10.15 p.m.) Capa Town, July 23. General Botha had a rousing reception; • in the City Hall, which, was crowded with delegates from all parts of the. country. . A sword was presented to General Bothaj inscribed, "Draw mo for God and thy King, and justice and truth." General Botha, in responding, said 'his men liad achieved a piece of work whicli would contribute in tho highest degree , to the development of South Africa, and produce a better understanding among the wbito races. The greatest enemy was not the Germans, but tho natural condition of the country, the most difficult for fighting he liad ever seeri.'»His protest regarding the poisoning of wells made the Germans stop the practice. He applauded the women for maintaining the farms while the menfolk were fighting. General Botha added that he intended to appeal to South Africa to erect, a worthy memorial to. ./those who had laid down their lives.
