The heaviest penalty imposed on any defendant was in the case of an old man named William Barker. REMANDS GRANTED. X young woman, named Ada Beany, for whom Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared! was remanded until' this morning on a charge of theft, and an order was made that, in the meantime, she bo detained in the Salvation Army Homo. It is alleged that, between July 14 and July "1, s '>® s J°' e from H. H. Plummer goods valued at ,£3 is. id. : Victor .Panning Eraser was. 011 the application of Chief Detective Boddam, remanded until Wednesday next. The charge against him is that he assaulted timothy Sullivan and robbed him of goods and money to the valuo of £3 2s. 6d. Henry James Burn, alias Henry James, was remanded until Monday on a charge of failing, to maintain his wife. Mr. P. W Jackson appeared for the complainant and Mr. H. P. O'Leary for the defendant. ve ll and one surety BOUND TO KEEP THE PEACE. A young man, named-Frederick H. Pot; ter, consented to be bound in the sum of .£25 to' keep the .peace for 12 months towards William Joseph Jackson. Defendant was ordered to ■ pay solicitor's fee, costs, arid witnesses' expenses, totalling <£1 19s. Mr. A. H.. HinclmarsK appeared for Jackson,. while 'Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for Potter. "CONVICTED OF ASSAULT. ; Samuel Price, convicted of assaulting David Button on July 9, was fined Jfil, ; and ordered to pay solicitor's fee i£l Is., and witnesses' expenses Bs. Mr. H. Cunningham, charged with assaulting a neighbour, named Elizabeth Pickering, was convicted and ordered to .pay solicitor's fee, ,tl Is., and witness's expenses 4s. Mi\ n. F. INSOBRIETY. ; Persons convicted of insobriety wero penalised as follows:—Joseph Reginald Harding fined 10s., in default to undergo seven days'' "imprisonment; William Almond ; fined2os„ default three da.vs' imprisonment; ' Isidore Jacobus fined 205., default three, days' imprisonment. Seven first, offenders were also dealt with. ' ' BY-LAIVS BROKEN. ! For allowing stock to wander, various defendants were fined as follow:—Walter Iladley, «£l, costs 75.; Henry- Mitcholl, £1, costs 75.; Arthur Wiffcn,. .£l, costs 75.; Julius Lamberg, 155., costs and witnes's's expenses totalling XI. For carelessly driving ail express in Tinakori Road on June 30, Joseph Nidd was fined 10s., with costs 17s. and witnesses' expenses 16s. Eric Brown by letter that ho had used a motor-bicycle without a registration mark, and also that lio had ridden tho bicycle without" a litrhfc between sunset and sunrise. On the first' chargo lie was fined 55., with costs 75.. arid on the second chargo he was fined 55.. without costs. Dan Chanman, charged with not having a tuil-light on liis motor-par 011 July 11, was fined lis., with costs 7s. . A youth, named Fane Cox, who had ridden his bicyole in Adelaide Road 011 the evening of July 8 without a headlight, was fined 5g., with costs T«v
J. B. Grove, as tho owner of a house where a chimney caught Are on July G, was fined 55., with costs 7s. Albert Collyer, whose counsel (Mi - . P. H. I'utnam) placed extenuating circumstances before the Court, was fined Is. for carrying on the business of butcher in premises not licensed. J&mes Johnston was convicted and ordered to pay Court costs 7s. on a charge of not having a licensed number painted on a cab. FAILURE TO RENDER PERSONAL SERVICE. On account of failure to render the personal service required of them under the Defence Act, the following defendants were fined:—Mark Gerald Carter, &i, costs 75.; Walter Andrews, »£2, costs 75.; Bernard Sullivan (three charges) 305., costs totalling .£1 Is., E. L. Constable 10s., costs 7s. ALLEGED CONSPIRACY. In tho afternoon, the police proceeded with the prosecution of the two men, Andrew Joseph Wilson' aud_ James Hassall, who were charged with conspiring on May 22 at Greymouth with somo person unknown at Wellington to defraud ono Phillip Byrne of „E9. Chief Jletoctivo Boddam prosecuted. Mr. H. P. O'Learv appeared for Wilson, and Mr. P. W. Jackson for Hassall. ■ The information against Wilson was dismissed, but Hassall was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being allowed as before. In the report of the civil action Dyo Chum and Co. against M'Kay Bros., in yesterday's issued it was_ stated that judgment was given for plaintiff for J!29 13s. 9d., including ,£l2. iOs. paid into Court, with costs Mi 17s. 6d. The facts are that judgment was given, for Xl 7 3s. 9d. and costs ,£G 17s. Gd. Mr. R. Kennedy appeared for defendants.
