NELSON CATHEDRAL

NEW VICAR APPOINTED. It is announced that the new vicar of Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson, will be the Rev. George Edward Weeks, M.A., 8.D., LL.D., who is at present vicar of St. John's, Lowestoft, England. Dr. Weeks, who is 46 years of age, was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, whence he graduated B.A. in 1890 and M.A. in 1896. He took the B.D. in Durham University in 1901, the LL.B. in Trinity College, Dublin, in 1910, and the LL.D. in 1911. He was ordained deacon in 1892 and priest in 1893. Ho was licensed to the curacy of St. George's-in-the-East, and subsequently to that of St. James's, Hatcham. ' In 189S he became a chaplain for a year in the Royal Navy, and served in the Vernon, tiie Duke of Wellington, and the Victory. In 1899. he was appointed vicar, of St. Paul's, Durban, in the diocese of Natal, where ho . did excellent service during the South African War, and where by his tact and energy he healed the breach which had existed between the church in Durban and the General Synod of the Province ill consequence of legal difficulties* arising out of the Colenso trouble. After acting for a year as principal of Hilton College ho returned to England in 1906, and becanio vicar of St. Luke's, South Kensington. In 1911 ho was appointed to liis present vicarage at Lowestoft. The Rev. Dr. Weeks is' described as an active parish worker, and a very capable preacher. He has a distinct reputation as a missioner,, and has had wide experience in the movement for the deeping of the spiritual life. Dr. and Mrs. Weeks, with their family, _ will probably reach Nelson about'the middle of December. Tho Rev. J.'P. Kempthorno, the present vicar of the Ca'thfV dral, has been appointed to' succeed the Ven. Archdeacon Baker as vicar of tho Brightwat-er parochial. district, on tho Archdeacon's approaching retirement.
