MINERS PHTHISIS

BETTER PROVISION PROMISED. The Minister of Mines (tho Hon. W. Eraser) intimated in Parliament yesterday,,in answer to a question put by Mr. P. C. \Vobb, M.P., that ho hoped this session to bring down legislation to make better provision for miners suffering from Miners' Phthisis (Miners' 1 Complaint). Relief is now given under tho Miners' Relief Fund, administered by the Public Trustee, but the funds, which are derived from a duty on gold exported, have not been sufficient to meet all cases arising. _ Apart from this, tho Minister of Mines has been assisting urgent cases out of a £1000 grant made by Parliament. He considered, lie said, that the present mothod was very perfunctory, and he would try and bring down somo measure of a more permanent character. It was generally admitted that tho men incapacitated by that foil disease should not be left uncarod for.
