AWARDS SUSPENDED
UNUSUAL APPLICATION
IN THE ARBITRATION COURT
A special sitting of the Court of Arbitration was hold yesterday afternoon, His Honour Mr. Justice Stringer presiding. The Court had to deal with a motion—the first of its kind—for leave to apply to have amended the Engineers' Award (Dominion), the Boilermakers' Award (Dominion), and the Metal Workers' Award (Otago and Canterbury). All these awards were operating as from July 19 and tlio employers moved for leave under the following clause, which had been inserted in the awards by the Court: "The Court reserves tho right to suspend, alter, amend, or vary any of the provisions of this award, either of its own motion or with tho leave- of tho Court first obtained, on tho application of anv nariv to this award."
Mr. "\V. Pry or appeared in supnort of tlio motion, the proceedings, which were in tho nature of an ex parte application, being watched by Mr. J, E. Jenkinson for the Boilermakers' Union, and by Mr. J. Read fori tho Amalgamated Society of Engineers. The Court decided to suspend the awards until August 9, conditionally upon tho terms of tho old awards being obsorved. If tho awards, which have been suspended, are not altered or amended on August 9 they will be made retrospective to July 19. A special sitting of the Court will be held on August 9, when Mr. Pryor will havo an opportunity to show why 'tho awards should be reconsidered. In connection with the proceedings, the Court instructed the applicants to give full notice —at least a week before August 9—to the representatives of the other parties and to furnish them with the grounds of the. application.
