CASE OF MEASLES

MEMBER OF THE CREW LANDED

Just before the House of Representatives rose last night tho Minister of Public Health (tho Hon. R. H. Rhodes) made a statement with regard to tho Hospital Ship Maheno. It had been rumoured, ho said, that a case of cerebrospinal meningitis had occurred on tho vessel, but that had been proved to bo without foundation. However, there was ono caso of sickness that day. There was no sickness on Tuesday, but that day a caso of measles was reported, and in order to allay any uneasiness His Excellency the Governor desired the fact to be known. He had received notification that day that a member of tho crew had developed measles. He had been landed in Adelaide, and liis mato isolated, so it was not feared the disease would spread. Mr. G. W. Russell (Avon) said that he was sure the House would be sorry to hear that a. case of measles had occurred. At tho same time ho asked if tho Minister had any statement to make with regard to what had happened at Berhamporo Hospital that (lay.

Mr. Rhodes: I have nothing to say with regard to Berhampore. We removed tho men from there.

Mr. Witty: Death is removing some of them, I am afraid. Mi;. Russell's reference was to the Wellington Hospital, and ho said that within tho last half-hour he had received information that two men had died and two others were very bad. Mr. Rhodes said that there wero serious cases at Trentliam, but they wero somewhat better that day. Berhampore had been closed down. Ho know that there wore some serious cases at Wellington Hospital, but tho deaths referred to had not been reported -to him.

Dr. Thacker (Christelmrch East) asked, as a matter of urgency, whether the report of the medical men on Trentliam would ho laid b.eforo tho House the following day. • Mr. Rhodes: I' understand the Commission unofficially asked seven doctors to go out to Trentham; Whatever report they make they will make to tho Commission. ,
