Pr. Fitchett received a private cables gram yesterday informing him that his son, Lance-Corporal Wilfred Fitchett, is progressing favourably.
Mr. J. W. Kemplin, of Morison's Bush, met with an accident on Tuesday, by which he will probably lose tho sight of one of his eyes. He was clearing a fencing line when a branch struck him on the face and lacerated the eye. Dr. M'Carthy attended to hiin and ordered his removal to the Wellington Hospital.
Portraits of all past chairmen of the Victoria College Council are to be obtained, if possible, and hung in the council room.
Tlie death occurred on Monday of Mr, James G. Purvis, a resident 'of the Rangiora district for over fifty years. For years he was interested in the flour-i milling business.
Lieut. J. Hugh Mather, R.N.V.R., who was a member of Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition, and; who acted as private secretary to Commander E. ItG. It. Evans, R.N., during his lectura tour, received his commission shortly after the outbreak of war. He has since been attached to the Staff of the Royal Naval Division, Crystal Palace, London. A recent Admiralty announcement stated that Lieutenant Mather had been promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant-Commander wifcli seniority; from May 25.
Mr. TV. AVSffitzer, who lias been a<> countant at tlio Nelson office of the Union Steam Ship Company for the past ten years, has been transferred to the Wellington office. He has been succeeded by Mr. R. N. Kyngdon, of New, Plymouth'.
Private T. J. B. Robb, who has succumbed to his wounds, was a son of Mr. T. Robb, of Nelson. Deceased, who was nearly 26 years of age, served his apprenticeship at the An.-lior Foundry, in Nelson, and had successfully sat for the marine second engineer's certificate. He had served on various steamers, and 1 left the ill-fated Kairaki a short time before she foundered. For a time he was engaged in the Union Company's yards in Wellington as a fitter. He enlisted as a stretcher-bearer. Private Robb was a prominent Rechabite, and was a Past Chief Ruler of the Bud of Promise Tent, Nelson. Ho was also an Orangeman, being attached to the Wellington (/range Lodge. Mr. Hugh D. M'lntosh, proprietor of the Tivoli Theatres, will leave for Syd< ney by the Mocraki to-morrow. Tho Hon. Colonel Collins, M-L.C., who'is in chargo of the Hospital oliip Maheno, has been granted lime months leave of absence by the New Zealand Sports- Protection League, and the board have expressed -their appreciation of his. services to the league, and their sincere wishes that all success may attend the important and arduous work ha has voluntarily undertaken in the interests of the Empire.
Mr HaTry R. Dix. wh> has been one of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company's chief engineers for some years, is now, with his vessel, engaged in Admiralty work in the Mediterranean. Mr. H. R, Dix is a younger brother of Mr. oyanoj; Dix, of Wellington.
