THE NATIONAL CABINET

ISSUE STILL DOUBTFUL'. Those members of the House who arc interested' in the proposal to establish a National Cabinet, cither as supporters or opponents of the scheme,- arc anxiously awaiting the outcome of the Opposition Caucus to-day. There is no certainty that oven after this meeting the Opposition Leader will be ready to commit himself to a definite acceptance or rejection of tho Government's offer, but it is the geiioral opinion that the final settlement can not now be lone delayed. The ultimate result is still doubtful. There is room for reasonable doubt, however, whereas last-.week-it appeared that there was no-room at all for doubt. Tho belief then was that there could be no National Cabinet, It ■is understood that the offer made by the Government is that four Oppositionists shall, sit in a Cabinet of nine—a proportion of live-four in favour of the Government-Party.

In the House of Representatives yesterday Mr. J. A. Hanan gave notice to move: "That there be laid before this House a return showing the particulars of all inonoy paid by the Government by way of 'salary, fees, travelling allowances, and travelling expenses to Colonel Purdy since tho beginning of the war up to the present date."

A Bill to amend the Shops and Offices Act has been.introduced into Parliament by Mr. A. M. Myers (Auckland East). His Bill provides that in towns in which Saturday is appointed as the Statutory closing day for the weekly half-holiday, any occupier of a, shop, shall ho entitled to close on Wednesday instead of Saturday on giving notice of his intention to the Inspector for the Labour Department.
