Strikes at the Remington arms and cartridge factories at Bridgeport, employing twelve thousand persons, begin to-day, involving twelve additional factories engaged in sub-cpntraots. Agitators are proceeding to Newhaven, to bring out the Manchester Company's employees. _ The same agitators havo. been active in New England, causing disputes ' wherever munitions are manufactured. Universal strikes would disastrously affect ammunition contracts, and the strike would bo especially serious at Bridgeport, which is flic leading ammunition centre 1 . The Labour leaders declare that they are merely using the golden opportunity to obtain an eight-hour day _ and wage increases. The employers insist that secret- agencies aro responsible. Mr. Samuel Gompers, of the American Federation of Labour, _ charges German agitators with stirring up trouble, and asserts that they attempted to bribe Bridgeport labour leaders. SHELLS. FOR .CANADA. BIG CONTRACT WITH FINANCIAL GROUP. New York, July 19. It is reported that a, contract for fourteen and a half million sterling for tile supply pf shells lias been placed by the Canadian- Militia' Department in the hands of a financial group, which will arrange for sub-contraoting.
