CHESS NOTES

n?c le o "' n Ston Chess Club opens its 1915 season on Saturday evening next with a sides' match, Bowlers v. the Club. .Thirty-five bowlers ohosoa from tlie various local greens will be pitted against a, liko number of players chosen by tho Wellington Cliess Club. Games not played on Saturday evening may be contested at any time within a month from that date, the committoo recognising the futility of trying to bring two thoroughly representative teams together on any one evening.owing to the number of counter-attractions that exist nowadays. A Bowlers' v. Non-Bowlers' match was played here three years ago, when the latter won by 7 games to 5. Tho Bowlers hope to turn the tables on their opponents this time, and as their team has tho services, of players like Barnes, Still, Allen, Bairaud, Purclias, Gyles (2), Tanner, Armstrong, Carman,* etc., they should give an excellent account of themselves.

A committee meeting of the Wellington Chess Club was lield recently, when the club's delegates to the Now Zealand Chess Association were instructed to support the proposal to postpone tho uext championship congress owing to conditions arising from tho war. To fill vacancies caused by the resignation of Mr. Cowper Hill, Sir. Gyles, sen;, has been elected lion, treasursr, tnd Mr, F. K. Kelling is acting as hon. secretary iintil a permanent Appointment, to this office can be made. In the annual handicap tourney of the Working Men's Club, Messrs. Peake, Key, and Barnes have mado the best scores to date. A special general meeting will" bo held shortly to consider some proposals submitted by the New Zealand Cliess Association and to fix the prizes for the club's 1915 tourneys. Mr. D. Purchas is leading in the annual handicap tourney of tho Wellington South Chess Club.. Tho members of this club are looking forward to their impending match with the Ngaio Club.
