IN THE NEW CAMP

GOOD PROGRESS. NO SERIOUS ILLNESSES A visit to the new training camps at Rangiotu and Waikanae was made on Saturday by the Minister of Defence, Hon. J._Allen. He states that all tho men with the exception of tho sick aro now under canvas, and that they are faring well, are comfortable, and aTe doing splendid work. ■ Tho Trentham Regiment are at Rangiotu, whilst tho Seventh Reinforcements aro at Waikanae.

Ths Eighth Reinforcements non-com-missioned officors' camp has been started at Palmerston North. These men nave been billeted in,hotels during tho past fow days, but they will now go into'the Show Ground buildings, which are very swtablo for the purpose. This section, .which includes Messrs. T. E Y. Seddon and Downie Stewart, M.P.'s., will bo given a month's training. "The men, said the Minister, "are learning to be moro self-dependent, and to look out for themselves by guarding against wet and other discomforts as far as possiblo. This is part of their necessary training, and I am glad to see that tho men are showing so much interest and initiative. I was greatly struck with this on visiting the Seventh Reinforcements at Waikanao. For instance, they have dug not only trenches round their tents, but- have also dug trenches to takoiaway the surface water. Ifc is very pleasing indeed toseo how the officers and men there aro sotting "to make the best of things,"

The sioltj men from tlio new camps, tlio Minister states, are making favourable progress. There aro no serious cases, and the one or two serious cases that occurred at Waikanao and Palmerston have improved. Tho ailments a-ro mostly measles. There has also been a case of appendicitis.
