News has been'received in 'Wellington that Major W. J. Hardham, V.C., who ■was ; wounded in the Dardanelles on June 3, has been; discharged from hospital at Cairo, and is now in one of tho convalescent homes there.

The Eastbourno Borough Council has recorded its deep regret at the Town Clerk's (Mr. J. D.' Avery) severance of his connection with the council and its high appreciation of hi 9 services and his unfailing interest in the welfare of the borough. Mr. Avery' l : successor, Mr. J. S. Day, will take up his duties on .'August 16, arid from Saturday next; until that date Mr. C. Blackman will act as Town. Clerk.

MavHugh J. >M'lntosh', proprietor of the Tivoli theatres in-Australia, and the man who initiated the big Sports Stadium in Rushcutters' Bay, Sydney, will arrive from the north with the Tivoli Follies Company to-day. This iwill be the first occasion that Mr. M'lntosh has visited Wellington.

Deceased, who was about sev-enty-five .yeaTS of age, was for . many years stationed at Miranda. Ho . was afterwards transferred to Collingwood,' and remained there until ho retired from the service. During the Maori War he was associated' with the late 'Mr. Alex. Brodio (afterwards chairman of the Thames County Council) in laying down military telegraphs in tho disturbed districts in the Auckland province. . Mr. Hunter lias left a widow, two sons, and four daughters, one or whom is postmistress at Birkenhead.

Canon Knowles has resigned- -the offices ho holds in the Canterbury diocese, Canon Knowles is (says the "Evening News") now eighty-five yeaTS of age, and has worthily earned the "Well done, good and faithful servant," of the high interests he has had so much at heart for over sixty years. It was at the latestheld meeting of tho Diocesan Standing Committee that Canon' Knowles stated that he intended handing over the seals of office. His resignation will take ef-' feet six months lionce.
