FRENCH CLUB

Mrs. MacPhail, Lecturer on Modern Languages at Victoria College, gave a very interesting lecture at the meeting of the French Club on Thursday night, her subject being. "Racine and His Works." The lecturer, in sketching the career of th,e great French dramatist, spoko of his education, and of his having been taught by one of the greatest Greek scholars of the, age. This enabled him in after life to - draw from Greek authors in tho original, so that several of his best plays are based upon subjects of ancient Greek history and legend. The lecturer .then referred to his sacred dramas, "Esther" and "Athalie," which were written towards the closo of Racine's Jife. After this, Mrs. MacPhail, assisted by Miss Kidston, _ Miss Woodhouso, and Mr. H. Mackenzie read several scenes from the drama, "Athalie." This part of tho performance was much appreciated. Madame.De Cleene, who presided, proposed a hearty .-vote of thanks to tlio performers, including Miss Edmundson, who had playd an overture. Madame De Cleene,. in the course of her remarks, congratulated Mrs. MacPhail and her assistants on the real treat they had afforded to the members of the club. Tho proceedings closed with the singing of the "Marseillaise." At . a social held in tho'Petone Drill Hall Miss'A. M. Senior, who was the Hutt Valley candidate for Queen of the Carnival, was presented, on behalf of the -Woollen Mills Employees, with a gold wristlet, watch'.
