TRENTHAM CAMP SITE.
Sir,—There appears to. be a great deal said about the 'iVentham Camp having been originally a swamp, and black' birch at that. . Now I am not a political humbug, - but I speak and write from practical experience extending over close ion 75, years. Near the Trentham Camp in the early days there was a small swamp at the base-of the hill. Tliat swamp, was drained some 50 .years ago, and was used for many a long year as a dairy farm. Where the camp- buildings are there was originally a black birch forest, and black birch always grows upon good hard soil. ■ '. I bred and worked horses iii the Tipper Hutt district for some sixty years, and I never knew of a case of mud fever. I only , had one case of strangles, and that.'did hot-prove fatal. —I am, etc., 6.
