HATED EVERYWHERE
— ' . 'AUSTRIAN STATESMAN ON. THE " GERMANS. The war correspondent of the "Berlingske Tidende" had an interview with Count Julius Andrassy in Budapest just after the latter's return from Berlin, where he : had conferences" with tlie German statesmen. The Count did not Conceal the fact that these conferences dealt with tho question of peace and its conditions. ■ "Unfortunately," said Cotmt Andrassy, as quoted by the Danish paper, "no party seems to understand that a real result cannot-be_ expected, or that tliei only result of this war may bo no result. On both sides, victory is constantly claimed. I can at present expect only ono good outcome of the war, namely, that it will certainly bo impossible to make war in the future. : Only a surprise attack, such as the one in Belgium, could be successful. When two armies aro dug in, as now, for a fight of position, the result may be a draw. Tho trenches may be moved some niiles forward, but this is of, no special importance for tho total 'resiilt. It seems as if modem war know nothing of final results, and Napoleon would have been desperate if ho had lived to see this conflict. '■ "I regret to'say that it is a matter of . fact that the Germans aro liated everywhere. They will never obtain a world domination, as they havo to defend too many frontiers, and their colonies have hitherto only cost them money. But England and Russia, on the contrary, are two worlds, and Russia will rule from Constantinople if she beats us. But I should think England would bo displeased at this Russian triumph." Tho correspondent asked if the Russians really aro hated in . the Hapsburg monarchy, and Count Andrassy. answered :— •' "Not at all. Wo don't hate any nation except the Servians, but we are menaced by the Russian policy, and by Panslavism, and, please remember, wo are pinched in between Slavonic peolpes, and that we also have inside .our own frontier a lot of Slavs: A defeat means cur race's ruin, and the result of the war is a question of death or life to us.For our part, we don't want any conquests ; we only want to be allowed to exist,"
