SUPPLY OF PRINTING PAPER

A SERIOUS POSITION,

A deputation from tho executive of the Newspaper Proprietors' Association, now sitting in Wellington, waited on the Prime .Minister yesterday and placed before, him the very serious position existing with respect to the supply of paper used for the printing of newspapers. Owing to tho impossibility of securing sufficient space in the steamers leaving Canadian ports, many of tho leading paper's view the position with alarm. A very largo proportion of tho paper -used in New Zealand is made in Canada, and it is aii increasing- trade and one that should be fostered. Tho position was put. before Mr. Massey by Mr. Selig, president Of the association, and'by Mr. Carmichaol, agent in Australasia for two of the largest Canadian mills, who showed that affairs aro likely to become most critical, with almost a certainty that newspapers will be obliged to reduce the'number of pages they now publish unless relief is found from some source. Mr. Massey was very obliging and sympathetic, and', said ho sent a cablegram about a fortnight since to Sir George Foster, Canadian Minister of Commerce, putting tho position before him and asking him to do his best to secure tho shipment of sufficient supplies to relievo the anxiety of New Zealand newspaper proprietors. Ho had not yet received a reply, and would again cable to the Canadian Minister. A deputation from the Newspaper Proprietors' Association, which was also accompanied by Mr. Carmichael, last iveek waited on the management of the Union S.S. Co. at Dunedin, and urged them to do their best to- give all possible space they could in their steamers sailing from tile Pacific Coast, a large mill near Vancouver being able to give frill tonnage. Tho Union Company met the deputation very courteously, but expressed serious doubt as to being ablo to relievo tho position.
