EASTBOURNE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
An excellent day's work was done by tlio Eastbourne Beautifying Society on" Wednesday. . Tho Mayor of Eastbourne, Mr. J. P. Kelly, opened the proceedings at 9.30 a.m. ' by presenting the shield for the Juvenile Branch, which was won for the year by the i;eam captained by Master Zohrab. Mr. A. Blair's report oil the caro of the .trees by the children was read by Mr. Kelly,. and tho trouble taken by him in tile matter suitably acknowledged.: The society asked Mr. Kelly to plant two fine Pohutakawas in Rata Road, in commemoration of the bravo deeds done by our soldiers in Gallipoli. Special guards will be erected around tlieso with a suitable notice, and they_ are to be . specially eared for by t'ho juvenile branch. The children in ten squads then completed tho planting of Rata Road with poliutakawas. ' The" main body worked at tlie completion of Oroua Road, and the task was successfully accomplished, 42 trees being planted, and guards erected. A section under Mr. P. D'E. Hodgkins completed the planting on the Main Road at Rona Bay witli Ngaios, erecting 11 guards; they also planted the front at Rona Bay with cabbage trees in guards already erected. Lunch and. afternoon tea were provided by the ladies of the Executive Committee, and wero much appreciated. Working bees Sire being arranged for the next few- Saturday afternoons, and the secretaries arc anxious to receive tho names of volunteers. It is hoped to complete tho planting of tho streets ill Rona Bay during the present season.
