WELLINGTON SOCIETY MEETS,

The fortnightly meeting of the committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday. Mr. J. S. Jamieson presided. . A letter was received from tho Minister of Defence (Hon. J. Allen) In response to the society's complaint regardings tlio cutting of the manes and

tails of troop horses. .The Minister, in Jus reply, said that any action taken m connection with the animals of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces was undertaken with a view to doing the best possible for the animals, ihus rendering them as fit as possible for tho' service required. The manes of troop and artillery' Worses were cut principally for sanitary reasons. All possible piecautions, continued the Minister, were taken by the veterinary,ollicers against the spread of skin diseases here aud in Egypt or other Eastern countries, where vermin of many -varieties capable of causing, extreme irritation wore very common, and practically übiquitous! A long mane would assist in , harbouring vermin and perpetuating contagious skin affections, thus. rendering ■ tlnur eradication difficult. The tails of. horses were not docked in New Zealand, and were not shortened beyond trimming off straggling ends sufficiently to pioduco a neat appearatice. The communination was received: ' ,

In his usual report to the society, Captain J. Henry detailed various cases of cruelty to animals, mostly horses, which ho had discovered and remedied during the past fortnight. One driver had been fined in court, whilo another case waS ponding.

•; A further instalment of donations (£2 145.) from M-asterton towards the society's funds was received from Mrs. N. R. Fannin.

M'Leod, Mrs. Osborn, Haslam, and Miss Greenwood, 2s. 6d. each; Mrs. Koberstein, and C. Bary, 4s. each. Total, £7 13s.'' .
