Trooper Ernest Smith, of the Canterbury Mounted Reinforcements, who died through illness contracted, at Trentham, was_ accorded a', military, funeral in Christ-church on Sunday. Tho body was brouglit down from Wellington in the morning, and the coffin was'carried from the wharf. to 'the railway station by members of tho Garrison Artillery. Trooper Smith, - prior to enlisting, was, in_ tho Railway Department,, and the firing party was drawn from the. New Zealand. Railway Engineers, under Ser-geant-Major Emory, llie body .was conveyed, on a gun carriage supplied by the E'Battery, under Corporal Dennis, and following the body were men from the Railway Battalion and the - Christ-, church Infantry Corps, as well ns Trentham men and veterans, all under tho command of . Major M'Ready., Capta'in Northcote, tho area group commander, also" present'. The C.Y.C. Band, under Bandmaster' Thorn, played :"A Garland of |Flo*'ers" on the way to the' Avonside Cometery, whero tho burial service was conducted by' the Rev. 0. Fitzgerald. .There was a large attendance of the public at tho funeral, and many of the Linwood Unit of the Citizens' Defence Corps were present. )
