• PREFERENCE TO GOVERNMENT . EMPLOYMENT, -The 'Minister of Defence "(the Hon. J:'Allen) -was.recently asked by Mr. L. M-Tmtt, M.P.i whether'ho -noticed 'that' oiie of tho Australian Governments had determined to: give preference .to . returned wounded soldiers in such future Government Appointments. as they were able to fill; and, if so, would'he advise his .Government.to:take similar action? • it In' his. reply 'yesterday Mr. Allen said that ho was taking-• steps as far as vacancies in his own Department woro concerned to ensuro that ex-members' of the' New' Zealand Expeditionary lotco -who had'been wounded in action and had recovered to the extent of being ; fouhd not' physically fit for.\milita,ry duty, should receive special consideration. -The question r of : tlie' appointment'of returned wounded soldiers to positions of a civil nature in the Public , Service _ had also been considered by the Public Service Commissioner, and the matter had been dealt with in a minute by, the Commissioners', of May 10 last as - follows: — "(1) Returned soldiers , of good record,\ and whose, history before they , left for tho war was known to be. good, to be givon • special consideration (provided they are suitable]) for' appointment -in •the General Division, or for temporary clerical employment if such is'available. (2) Special consideration to be given to the employment of ■ relatives of soldiers killed or disabled during the war, provided the Commissioners are satisfied that , a reasonable necessity for this exists."
