FIERCE FIGHTING AT SOUCHEZ

TRENCHES TAKEN AND RETAKEN GREAT ACTIVITY ALONG THE WESTERN FRON The High Commissioner reports:— / London, Ju'y 12, 5.10 p.m. "There was great activity during the night on several parts of the West-, ern front. "In the Arras sector tho enemy, after having thrown a large number of asphyxiating bombs, attacked south of Souchez, but failed. A second attack, however, enabled him to occupy tho cemetery, and parts of the adjoining trenches. "In the Vo3ges ; south-west of Amertzwiller, the enemy exploded a mine near tho Allies' position, and then attacked in force, but was repulsed, suffering important losses.
