FIERCE FIGHTING AT SOUCHEZ
TRENCHES TAKEN AND RETAKEN GREAT ACTIVITY ALONG THE WESTERN FRON The High Commissioner reports:— / London, Ju'y 12, 5.10 p.m. "There was great activity during the night on several parts of the West-, ern front. "In the Arras sector tho enemy, after having thrown a large number of asphyxiating bombs, attacked south of Souchez, but failed. A second attack, however, enabled him to occupy tho cemetery, and parts of the adjoining trenches. "In the Vo3ges ; south-west of Amertzwiller, the enemy exploded a mine near tho Allies' position, and then attacked in force, but was repulsed, suffering important losses. Several prisoners were captured." * London, July 13, 1.15 a.m'. "Replying to » bombardment of thei trenches before Lombaertzyde and Nieuport, tho Allies silenced two of the enemy's batteries. "Despite the enemy's bombardment, with asphyxiating shells, of our trenches at Carency and Souchez, a counter-attack placed the French in possession of a portion of the trenches abandoned yesterday. "In the region of tho Aisne, the contest Tvith mines continues. ■"In the Argonne, there is great activity. "At Bois Lo Pretre, two of thei enemy's attacks were checked.'?" Hand-to-hand fighting is proceeding at, Souchez, where we stormed and recaptured the cemetery after hard fighting, taking prisoner 165 Frenchman and four machine guns."
