CATHOLIC FEDERATION

HALF.YMR.LT MEETING; '' : The half-yearly meeting of the Wellington Diocesan Club oi the New Zealand ' Catholic Federation. will commence at Wellington on Thursday. In the course of its report the executive urges on parish committees the' need-, for '' keeping the membership up to its full strength, and expresses gratification at'the fact that a building for Catholic purposes had been erected.at the Trentham Camp. The executive expresses its regret that it cannot see its way to Teco)nmen'd payment of' the espouses,of delegates attending the conference ; .the funds are not sufficient to admit of . such payments being made," and. the executive points "out that |his fact affords an additional reason for doing even-thing possible to increase membership., The necessity for a hostel for Catholic women arriving at or employed in the City has long been felt, and at the last meeting of the executive the matter was referred to the council for consideration. The council, after'giving the question much attention,. reluctantly, came to the conclusion that it would be unwise, in view of the many claims, at present upon the generosity of the public, to ask-for subscriptions .for this purpose. Since the matter was disposed of, however, information has; been received that the project would meet with sympathetic consideration from persons in a position to assist the movement, and the executive recommends that the incoming committee be requested to-Consider the question. In regard to' the war, the report states that many .of the Federation are now on active service* with the: Expeditionary Forces, and the Catholic manhood'of . New Zealand has furnished its full quota of men. . To tho relatives of those who (have given their lives for their: .country,' the executive, offers its deepest sympathy, and to those who have been wounded its earnest hope that they may soon be restored to health,'and to all engaged in this terribLo conflict its sincere wish that the war may be speedily; brought to a close. :' . In conclusion, the report thanks all the officers and members of parish committees for their services during the period under revieiv, and urges upon all the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity to advance the interests ofMho federation. The secretary places on record his' sincero appreciation of the many courtesies extended to him by the goneral secretary' (Mr. Girling-Butcher) and ■his-assistant. (Miss Butcher). — .
