AT BAY

GALLANT. STAND BY FRENCH , , CHASSEURS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Paris, July 11. A company of Chasseurs performed a heroic exploit during the fighting on the summit of Hils'onfirst.' .By a ruse, the Germans completely encircled the company, which nurriedly fortified a quadrangular space, and held it for four days. • On Juno 15 the Germans attacked in _ column four deep. Tho French position was critical, when a 75 millimetre gun in tho rear opened fire.. One enemy column was completely destroyed, and the others fled. The ground was strewn, with bodies.

The defenders were short of food, and a. small patrol went oiit in tho night and raided the German lines, bringing in a quantity'of tinned meat. Early on tho fourth day the Germans renewed the attack. Tho Chasseurs' ammunition was exhausted, but they rolled huge rocks crushing many of the enemy, and checked the offensive.The French artillery then got the range, and terrifically bombarded the German lines. This enabled a. battalion to rescue tho company, who had two killed and threo wounded. They captured ten men, a machine-gun, End. four thousand cartridges., , ■
