MAKARA AFFAIRS

> DEPUTATION TO THE COUNTY ' . COUNCIL. • The monthly meeting of the Makara County Council was ■ held yesterday. There were present: Councillors A. J. Taylor (in the chair). J. H. Haggerty, J. A. Pyle, H. J. Monaghan, B'. Bryant, and George Monk. A deputation from the Newlands and Paparangi Ratepayers' > Association waited on tho council in respect to several matters which, they stated wanted remedying, and which had been discussed at recent meetings called by the association. .Prior to hearing the deputation, Councillor Taylor inquired if the previous statement of tho Ratepayers' Association referring to the lax business methods of the' council was intended as a reflection on the present Town Clerk. Members of tho deputation replied in tho negative,'stating they were instead pleased with the business capabilities of tho new clerk. Tho deputation was then heard, and the various matters mentioned tivoked a - warm discussion. Among' the matters" brcught under the .council's notice were the. revaluation of certain properties ■ in. the county, the question of outstanding rates and the matter .of the council's balance-sheet of March 31, 1914. .. Members of the council informed the deputation that all these • matters had and wfere receiving attention. , The Prime Minister had been interviewed by the Town. Clerk regarding thei revaluation; of certain portions of . the county,' and :the Prime Minister, had .agreed, to the revaluation. The ■ chainnan informed the .deputation, that the other matters mentioned were receiving attention, and ..that the deputation's" complaints, fn this respect would be borne in mind.

! In> reference to tlie -new ■ road at Newlands, the councillors of -the Porirua Riding were deputed to arrange, a meeting with .Mr, C. Flitter on : the matter. A motion was passed making a general rate of 3s. 4d. in the £ on the capital .value of all .rateable property ,in : the Makara Riding,- and Id. in the £ in respect to the Porirua.Riding: 'An animal recurring special Tate of ss. Bd. in the £ was struck on the Newlands special'rating_ area.'' . It was'decide'd to, grant the application of Mr. W. E. Cook for permission to erect gates across the Opou Road. On the motion of Councillor. Haggerty it was decided that the Noxious Weeds Act should be enforced throughout - the whole district. It was decided to hold over for. further consideration the Wellington City Council's account regarding- tho maintenance of the Hutt Road. . ,

Mr. Kirkpatrick " was' appointed, county ranger and building inspctor.
