Two large and influential temperance deputations petitioned Mr. Hall (At-tcrney-General) in favour of 6 o'clock closing of hotels. Archdeacon Boyco pointed but that lato closing hours led to ' excessive drinking, fights, brawls, and immorality. 'The Anglican Archbishop of Sydney said it was-evident that Australia was leading the campaign against excessive drinking. There was 110 reason,why the salo of drink should not cease at 6 in tho evening like the sale of other commodities. The Rev. Mr. Hammond said that any politician who failed to.realise, the temper of tho present hour, Which had shown itself in favour of reform, would soon sink into oblivion. Mr. Hall replied that lie favoured nationalisation of the liquor traffic as a, short cut to prohibition. He promised to males -representation regarding early dosing to tho Cabinet as fviODgly
