j . POLICE CASES' TROUBLESOME SEAMEN . Mr. D, G. A. Cooper, S.M., dealt with tho police cases at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. ■ Two seamen off the : steamer La Blanca, named Henry Murray and Patrick M'Namara, were'eharged with absenting themselves without leave from' that vessel. Murray had a further charge of drunkenness preferred against him. Mr. A. W. Blair appeared for tho owners of the vessel, and explained that the two men lnd. made themselves a nuisance to the whole ship. A sentence of 14 days' imprisonment was imposed on each accused, who were ordered to be placed on board their vessel on its departure from Welington.

Walter Egan pleaded guilty to using obscene language in Manners Street, and was lined £3, in default one month's gaol. ■ ( A. youth of 17 years,, named Henry Arthur Grant, was convicted and ordered to come rip for sentence when upon, on a charge of stealing a quantity of brass from his "employer. On a charge of using indecent language, Edward Bloomlied was convicted 1 and ordered to,come up for sentence when called upon.

An old woman of 6S years named Eva Lola strenuously denied a charge of drunkenness.' Police evidence proved otherwise, and she was lined 10s., with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment.

For drunkenness, Mary Sprowell was fined £2, with the: alternative of seven days' imprisonment', and a prohibition order taken ;out against her. Thomas Hastings was mulcted in-a similar penalty, and! Patrick O'Neil .fined 205., or tluee days' imprisonment. Three, first offending inebriates wero dealt with.

AWARD GASES. The ■ Inspector of Awards (Mr. William Slaughter) proceeded against the licensee of the White Swan Hotel (Mrs. M'Guire) for a broach of the Hotel Workers' Award, in that during tlie week ending May 29 she failed to grant' one full day's holiday of 24 hours to an employee. A plea of guilty was entered, and in asking for a nominal penalty Mr. Slaughter stressed the fact that in future'oases of a similar nature t'he Department intended to press for a heavy penalty. The Magistrate Qlr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., imposed a nominal penalty of' Is. Two breaches of the Wellington Hotel Workers' Award were alleged against Mrs. Mercer, licensee of the Metropolitan Hotel, in that slio employed two assistants (employed in the kitchon) and failed to pay them the full'award rates. The Inspector of Awards vMr. William Slaughter) prosecuted, and Mr. 11l B. Ttistin appeared, for the defence. After hearing'the evidence the Magistrate imposed a fine of £2, in rospeot to each breach. Arising out of - this caso, a pantryman named Reginald Oliver was lined 10s. for accepting less than the award lat-e of pay. A breach of the same award was alleged against the licensee of the New Zealander Hotel (Mrs. E. M. Davev), in that slio employed a barman and failed to pay -the minimum Wage. _ After hearing the evjdencc the, Magistrate gavo judgment for defendant. Mr. W. Perry appeared for the licenseo.
