OBITUARY
MR.'WALTER LESLIE.^
The death occurred last evening, at his residence in Hill Street, of Mr. Walter ] Leslie, for many years oho of the senior members of Hansard staff, and wellknown in artistic circles . throughout New Zealand. Mr. Leslie had been suffering from a lingering and painful illness and his death was not unexpected' by his family and friends. Born at Sundury, in Middlesex, in. September, 1855. he came to New Zealand as a young man in 1878. Taking up his: residence in Oamaru, he entered into 'journalism, first'as reporter and afterwards as- sub-editor of the "North' Otago Times." He subsequently was appointed editor of tho "Poverty Bay Herald." and was for a term on tlie staff of the "New Zealand Times."" In 1884 ho joined the Government service in which ho remained up to the tune of his death, for four years being engaged on committee work, ,and for the remaining twenty-seven on the Hansard staff. ' Mr. Leslio was musical and artistic in his tastes, and was for many years a member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, at the annual exhibitions of which his watercolour sketches were well known. At ono timo he published a series of cartoons of- members of Parliament, which had' a.. 1 wide 'After the outbreak of war,' Mr. Leslie took an active part in organising the National Reserve, of which ho acted as secretary, and made a number of recruiting tours. Ho was 'occupied with this work until compelled to relinquish it through his illncsV H© is survived by a widow and one daughter. A sister, Miss Leslie, formerly' engaged in mission work in China; resides at Apiti.
