MISSIONS TO SEAMEN SOCIETY
(To the Editor.) Sir,—The account given at a meeting of the Sailors' Friend Society, as appearing in .the newspapers .of July 8, does not'put the position fairly. When i the Missions to. Seamen So-. ,Gi6tr.v was hustled out of the building, which.had been given to the society by. Mrs. Williams for the use and service of seamen, there was an agreement on tlie part of the solicitor to the Trust Board to -purchase . tho furniture, which was admitted by him to be tho property of the' Missions to' Seamen, and this was one of the conditions of our relinquishing the building.': ; That lias never'been, oarried out, and negotiations have been going .oil for a long time, the commit-, tee of' the Missions to Seamen Society offering tho furniture for £350, and at last, agreeing to take £150, and .they even agreed'to.take, that as a sort of rent ■of the furniture, and to repay the amount when the Missions to. Seamen Society resumes' work in the. institute, but the Sailors' Friend Society asked for; other, conditions, and the negotiations''we;ro broken off. v "
Tho committee of the Missions to Seamen: do not "want the furniture, but owijig to Mr. Moore's action in coining out from England and starting a rival mission, the,y wore piitvinto a difficult position, .having to carry on their work with a reduced) number of (subscribers, and thus they incurred liabilities. Tho furniture was the only asset, and the committee was bound to be just before being genorous. ' They asked for the £150 to enable their liabilities to be discharged. ■ They do not want the furniture, iior do they want to hampeT 'Mr. Moore, but they do want fair treatment and a, proper carrying out of obligations. It is absurd to -talk about a threat being held out that the .furniture would bo removed. Tho removal would only be tho natural outcome of refusal'to purchase; and, further, the date, July 14, was suggested . by the Sailors'. Friend Society.—l am, etc., " , • OH AS. P. POWLESi . ■ . Hon. Secretary, Missions to Seamen Cominitteo.iWellington,' July 8, 1915. /
