The most arresting item in the . war, news to-day is the report from Athens of the appearance of seven big German submarines in the Aegean Sea, stated to be a disturbing element in the naval and military situation in the Dardanelles. A dispatch from Sir lan Hamilton announces the complete failure of a heavy attack by the Turks in Gallipoli at the beginning of the week. There is a sensational story froji New York —unconfirmed—of a great British air expedition to. an important German port, presumed to be tho-Ger-man naval base at Wilhelmshaven, where, it is stated, a most valuable reconnaissance was achieved, at no loss to the airmen, Tho same report also mentions the approach of a British naval squadron off Terschelling (East Frisian Islands, near the German coast). The Austro-German forces in the eastern theatre have been heavily hit by tho Russians, who turned on their pursuers and inflicted terrible' losses, routing a whole division. . Tho great German attempt to force a way to Calais is being quietly and confidently awaited by tho Allies in the . Western theatre. ' Meanwhile, in Britain, in a hundred different ways, the mind of the nation ia being thoroughly aroused to the realities of tho great conflict,, and is solidly concentrating upon the one' great aim of the moment—to defeat and crush Germany's military power.
