PATRIOTIC SOCIETY
MONEY.IN HAND £73,000
AND MORE STILL TO COME
Mr. H. G. Hill presided at a. wellattended meeting of the General Executive Committee of the Wellington Patriotic Society, lield in the Chamber of Commerce lust evening. Voluminous correspondence was ■ dealt with- briefly, and .in .some cases offers, of goods for disposal were referred to opmmittees. Mr. Jas. M'lntosh. (treasurer) reported that the amount received by him up-to-date was £61,444 18s. Bd. In addition to that thore was an amount of £11,600 odd held by. thle Mayor, making a. total of £73,044 18s. 3d. There was still a good deal of money yet to come iu from various sources. Hie amount of £1293 17s. sd. for accounts was passed for payment, subject to dissection by the Finance Committee. Many of the accounts passed, it was explained, were sums paid for reproductive expenditure. • The Land Share Raffle. A lengthy discussion due to-misunder-standings took place regarding the 4000 shares m the Maraetai (Waikato) land syndicate which had been presented by Mr. John M'Masters, of Pirinoa, and his soils. It was decided that the raffle should be organised on business lines, •and Mr. David M'Laren was appointed organiser to travel tie' Dominion in connection therewith at an expenditure, mot exceeding £200., Mr. Hill (chairman) thought that the money would be well spent, as the raffle would not need so much advertising, and it was necessary to place , books of tickets in the hands' of responsible people in every town. The meeting was .thoroughly in accord with the proposal. The supervising committee' appointed were: Messrs..l.'O. H. Tripp. S. Kirkcaldie, H. G. Hill, W.. G. Colley, H. T. Gillmore, J. M!lntosh, J. Sykes, M.P., .and J. Lewis. The Executive Officers. Mr. R. Hall.said that-the secretary and treasurer had done yeoman service for the society. They had worked night and day, and lie, did not know how they) attended to their own. work and that of the Carnival too,' and he thought that in view of tlio responsibilities cast upon them, they should be remunerated in Home way for their services. Mr. J. (secretary) wished to thank Mr. Hall for what he had said, but the services he had given had been given-to the cause they were all working for. For his own 'part, and he" spoke for Mr. Colley too, they would decline Ito accept anything by-way of remuneration for their services. They had all -undertaken;. the duties in the siime spirit, not for what they could get out of> it, but what they could put into it. (Applause.) Mr. H. T. Gillmore suggested that the gentlemen concerned. should leave the room. .. ~ . ,
Mr. J. M'lntosh (treasurer) said that whother thoy left the room or not he wished it to, be clearly' understood that' the! services lie had given ,would be regarded as a donation to the Fund. (Applause.)
Mr. E. J; Colley (joint-secretary and returning officer) said that ho could ondorse what Mr. Lewis had said. Any donation given to/ him would - go to the l r und.' (Applause.) Mr. Hall said that something should 'be done to reward these gentlemen, and he suggested that the members of tho executive , might, club together and make them a presentation, if the funds were not to be made available for the purpose. Some tangible memento of the Carnival ought to bo givenHliein,. and it. would; afford him pleasure to contribute, something-'towards M_rl Lewis said they'were only units .ih the atl'aii'. The success of the Carnival was hot due to the three of'them; but. everyone who had helped, even to those who had rattled a money-box in tie street. 1 '■ They did not wish to be individualised at all. If they passed a vofe of thanks they would be very deeply grateful. • ;
Mr. D. C. Bates said, it was: mors Messed to give than to .receive. The I gentlemen ' mentioned ~ had been their hands and feet and head, guiding them hi the right way./ He proposed, smilnifily,'.that when - it was all over they miftlit meet and-spend a pleasant'eveniiiKj togother, when they could express proper recognition of their services and those of the chairman' (Mr. Hill), and sing "For They Are Jolly Good Fellowsl" -V ".' . ' Mr. .M'lntosh said that it'would be unfair to, make invidious, distinctions. They had all had their hands full, but tliey would have to do much more before the matter for which they were constituted was settled. ' ' ' A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs. Lewis, M'lntosb, and Colloy; with acclamation. " • '■ The Carnival Ball. ■ A' report was submitted from the Gar-, nival Ball Committee, the tenor of which ■ was that it was not the success it might have been'. It was stated that it would yield a profit' of between £40 and £50. Mr. 8., T. Doddrell submitted a report from the Decorations Committee, it had expended tho sum of £282 14s. Bd.,- but badges had been sold to the value of £150, so that the whole, cost would be about £150. The material used was now packed away in four zinclined boxes, and at a low estimate would fetch £50 if sold by auction. , The, Jap-; anese pagoda had also yielded a profit of £50. y. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Doddrell and his assistants, the,names of Messrs. Tancourfc.' and Price being especially mentioned in connection therewith. Professor Cardston's Remuneration. After a discussion it was decided i that the sum of £250 net be paid to Professor Oardston as remuneration for his services ,in connection with the carllival. This sum iB to bo paid in addition to his hotel and motor-car expenses. The decision on this point was a unanimous one, and many flattering remarks were made as to the manner in which ho carried l out his duties. A sum of £5 was also voted to bo expended on a vellum album containing a testimonial to the good work he had done in Wcl-I lington. in connection with the carnival. . The Band Contest. Messrs. H. T.
