WOUNDED SOLDIERS' FUND
NATIONAL SCHEME AND AN ALTERNATIVE. Messrs. J.. P, Luke (chairman), L. 0. H. Tripp, .James jtf'lntosh, H. Q. Hill, and David M'Laren were. present yesterday afternoon in the - Mayor's room as members of the committee appointed to make suggestions regarding the formulation of a. definite scheme to control the funds which have teen raised in Wellington and elso.vliere for the relief of wounded' soldiers and sailors; and their, dependents, : , as directed by' the general conference held in Wellington last week. .The meeting wav not open to the Press, but . a report was subsequently furnished by His. .Worship the Mayor. Initially, lie, stated that the Wellington delegates to a man favouredthe national scheme, and were almost sure; that it would come to a. general pooling of all moneys subscribed to tli&se funds in.the end, hut there were some representatives of other districts who did jiot see eye to eye with them in the matter, so it had devolved 011 thom to proposo some other scheme whereby the funds could; be administered to the best advantage. This was the topic that was freely discussed by those present at yesterday's meating, and as the outcome they had decided to recommend a district fund scheme, adopting / the four military districts as the areas in which each fund shall operat6. This, in the case of Wellington, _ would mean taking in the Tar,maki district on the West Coast, and as far-north as Gishorne on the East Coast,', end • that working relations be established between the administrative committee of the four provincial funds to prevent as far as possible any overlapping. It was decided to ndhere to the original dato (July 28) for the continuation of the general conference .(a postponement having been proposed), and that a conference of mayors, county council chairmen, and chairmen and secretaries of patriotic societies throughout the Wellington Military• District be called to assemble in Wellington on July 27, in order, if possible,: tbjt the proposal to take united action on provincial lines be, as far as Wellington is concerned, established prior to the general conference.
