"IT'S GOT TO BE DID"
I Private F. J. Walsh', O Company, of \the Bth Battalion of the Australian Infantry, in a letter , dated May 6 to his father, Mr. W. Walsh, of Duke Street, St. Kilda, said: "I/am getting on fine, jfuid do not think it will ho very long i before lam up again. I am in a love-' jly hospital, and, could not be treated . ( better. My. case is a mere trifle-to ■ some of t-lie poor boys, but, dad, it was n great, stand wo mado! Tlie boys U fought' like bulldogs. - Our transports •landed 750 yards from tho shore. We / .were put in torpedo-destroyers and taken about .500 yards nearer. As soon ns we stopped, we received our first •shot.. That was a ■shrapnel 'shell, which burst over our heads. : It caught ono of our chaps just over:the heart; I believe ho is getting over it well mow. . ; j ;Wo had to get into rowing boats to . ! go ashore; there was not enough room I for all of us, so I had to wait. -They j were putting these shells well over us.' iThey are: terrible Anyhow, I, ■ 'taissed—how, God : only knows! Well, I'Lgot ashore well up to the neck, I felt like a ton weight, with my three days' rations and 200 rounds: of , cartridges, and the-pack on my back. .It was no joke. While the . l\irks were putting these shells into us.vour big:. -Queen . 'Elizabeth was. blowing forts to pieces. ' I- tell you, dad, it put a funny feeling • around your heart, but we all seem to .look •: at- it-the same way..'. Over three • ridges we chased those Turks, and they -Kflt a more secure position.. My leg is , hurt just below the knee. The .doctor said the joint would not be involved. -I haven't received any news from libmo, ■ but I daresay it will turn up any day. X think you will have to-use the saine . jaddress. I suppose there was great exicitement when you got the news , in . 'Australia. Everyone seems to think it '■ was a great' bit of work. Visitors come J here sometimes and bring flowers, fruit,.and. smokes. In fact, we get everything that is possible—plenty of papers and books. Follows want to sfiako ■ themselves up' in -Australia, and. enlist. Thev: will all bo wanted 'to take the ; .boys' places. It's got to bo 'did,' and no delay. I think ovbry young fellow ought "to tako his turn now. '.Thero's ho place liko home, but thesn blokes have got to be stopped quick and '.lively."-.
