V 'Arbor Day occurs on'"Wednesday next, %hen it is anticipated that a good deal of planting will be done in and arouud the City Mr.; George Frost;(tlie chairliian'/of.' the; Reserves 'Committee. of , the ■ City Council) ' stated .: yesterday that some'official'' planting of suitable trees! would be done under the auspicos of tho committee on the Tinakori- Hills. above ■ Grant Road, which has always been' noted 'as- a particularly barren portion iof tlio :Town Belt. At one' tiaio these hills were covered . thickly with native •bush; which lont • a picturesque back-. • giound to what was then, known as -.' Thornddn Flat, but the needs of the settlers of those times gradually thinned , the virgin bush and no attempt .was 'ever made to replant. The lower Blopos . are bright with yellow. broonie in tho Giimmer-tirae,' and wliero broomo can ' flourish larger trees of a suitable cliarac- ■ ter will find sustenance. Some of the schools, it is understood, will undertake , to do a little planting in suitable spots, and tho council vis advertising the free 'distribution of.cartain classes of nursery stock to: citizens, who wish to make itheir own grounds attractive l arborially.
