A NEW ZEALANDER'S SELFSACRIFICE
The gallant maimer in which Private August Harwood, of the Auckland Infantry, mot his , death at the. Dajdanj elles is briefly described in a letter whicH aii Auckland dispatch rider, Private F.0. Garland, has written to his father^ "One of our bandsmen, Gus. Harwood,' a great, kind-hearted '\ fellow, was killed by shrapnel striking him in tho chest," says Private Garland. - "He ran into the firing line and dragged out tho. wounded two at a time, and did iihis eight times, before he,was caught. I understand that ho was recommended for tho Victoria Cross." . . Private Htfrwood was-killed in action on .May 5. "Ho was the youngest .son of the late J. H. Harwood, of Littla River, and received his early education there. Later he went to Invercargill> where lie was a member of the Hibernian Band, and was well known as a footballer. Two years ago ho we.nt to To Aroha. He has two brothers fight ing at tho Dardanelles.
