WOMEN AND THE WAR.

; Sir,—l have read in 1 different' newspapers where tho .women' 'in England, Sydney, Belgium'and France were training to serve tlieir country. The .women' of England have formed a corps that is known as "The. Women's Emergency Corps." Those women are trained to do 1 all kinds of work, -viz., "help in munition factories, drive taxi-cabs, and act as tram conductors,■: messengers; clerks in offices, etc., so as to set the men. free for servioe in ' the field. The women of. Sydney have formed a corps' known' as "The Women Volunteers." ' These are drilled to handle rifles and are. placed on a regular military footing, so, if need' bo, they could help to defend their, country The women of Belgium have released the men in coal-niines so as to allow them to iom tho fighting forces. In Paris a Frenchwoman is raising a regiment of women compatriots on a regular military footing and will he commanded by officers of "rtio "Army until their instruc-tion-is so far advanced that they may find officers among -themselves. They will wear khaki uniform and will learn bo handle a rifle. The regiment will be divided into several sections.- One will take the place of soldiers row, employed in army offices, and thus set the men free lor service in the. field; another' will form a corps of military cyclists and motor drivers; a third is preparing to undertake tasks of escorting provision vans,, occupying conquered . or- reconquered towns, and other duties designed to release military contingents for service in the fighting. lines. . ./ Now, what are; we women in NewZealand doing? It. is true we knit and sew for our -soldiers, but. do not the women in the above-mentioned countries do the same for their soldiers? 1 think the young women of New Zealand ought to enlist and offer their services to their country- in some such way as the women in the other countries are. doing. ' Were this done it would enable more men to:.go direct to the firing line.—l am; etc., WILLING TO ENLIST. Halcombe, July 5, 1915. ,
