THE SEIZURE OF THE BAYERN

Italy's reply to Germany's- protest states: that tho legality of the Bayern's seizure may be settled after the war. Italy, points out that the steamer's cargo comprised war material valued at £250,000. including. 500,000 heavy calibre revolvers, 100)000. rifles','. 200.000" cases of ammunition, three aeroplane sheds, four biplanes; fitted; with .-.-wireless installation, '■ and machine-guns, 1000 bombs for aeroplanes, and fourteen fieldguns with carriages.'^' The military authorities believe, that the cargo was intended for use against the British' in East Africa. [The German steamer Bayorn had previously been interned in Italian waters, was recently inspected, . and on the discovery of • her secret' cargo of war material was promptly confiscated by the Italian Government.]
