Captain J. Bono, marine superintendent of tho New; Zealand Shipping Company, arrived in Wellington on Saturday. Dr. A. A. Martin, of Palmerston North, who was engaged on active service with the Army Medical Corps in France for some months, will be . the ■guest of lionour at the New Zealaud Club's luncheon on Wednesday nest. Mr. H. C. A. Dundrum, draughtsman. to the Napier Borough Council, died early on Sunday morning (telegraphs our Napier correspondent). He had been in the council's employment for about thirty-five years, and was greatly, respected. Sergeant H. T. Morton, of the Sixth ■ Reinforcements (mounted), has been promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. Mr. Morton is an honours graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and was prior to his enlistment with the Expeditionary Forces in prao-' tice as a barrister and solicitor at Feilding. Captain D. R. Kirker, who has been in command of No. 7 Company Auckland Garrison Artillery, has joined the Expeditionary Reinforcements, and Captain J. F. Pullen has been appointed to tako his place. Captain H. S.Morran has taken command of No. 1 Company, vico Lieutenant 1 W. R. Goldes, who is also going to the front. The deatli is reported of Mr. H. L'r Nicholas, one of Wellington's oldest settlers (late of Marton), at the age of--67. The late Mr. Nicholas arrived in Wellington from England with his parents in 1853. A few years later he entered the drapery trade. After being several years with Messrs. Kirk* caldie and Stains, lie managed a Neleoii business, subsequently opening business on his own account at Wanganui. Failing health after several years compelled him to give up business. He then commenced farming at Maxwelltown, and eventually moved to Mokau. Here lie lost his wife (a Miss Craighead, of Lower Hutt), seven yearsj ago, and the shock completely shattered his health. Mr. Nicholas is survived by two daughters. Mr. T. S. L. Nicholas, of Hawora, and the Rev. C. E. Nicholas, of Dannevirke, are hrothers of the deceased. Mr. Norman Collie left for Christ-church-and the West Coast on Saturday night. He returns via Nelsoiiy where ho gives an organ recital; A very pleasant function took place at Godber's rooms on Saturday evening last, the occasion being a presentation:, and 6end-oft\ tendered by the management and staff of the -Victoria Laundry Co., Ltd., to Mr. Charles Noblo, who has for many years been in the employ of tho firm, and who leaves, shortly to take c liargo of the laundry attached to tho New Hospital Ship for the Dardanelles. Opportunity was also taken to t-ender good wishes to Mr. E. Squiro, of the clerical staff, who, from health considerations, relinquisheshis duties to recuperate. Mr. W. Naismith, the manager,, presided, and expressed the' esteem and regard in which the departing guests were held by the working staff, paying eloquent tribute to Sir. Noble's patriotic spirit in offering hia services in his country's cause, and wishing him. God speed and a safe return. .An enjoyatylo evening was largely, contributed to. by Messrs. Wilmot, Mottelle, Holt, Roberts, Flanagan, Tindle, Jeffries, M'lntyre, Smith, Stewart, Jones, Williams, Naismith, otc. The. guests, in acknowledging tho firm's good wishes, voiced th'eir sincere _ recognition of the cordial relations existing be-' tween management and employees. Private Sydnoy Harland Heald, of the' 3rd (Auckland) Regiment, was reported on June 16 to have been "killed in action." He was tho eldest son of Mr. R. A. Heald, who was in business inVictoria Street for. many years, but ia now. residing in England. Private "Syd," Heald was well known in Auckland athletic circles. He was a chaijipion schoolboy runner, and later aa ait amateur proved on» of tho most successful of tlio local handicap runners. Ho acted as timekeeper for most of the local sports gatherings, and his genial, presence will be greatly missed. He was in tho employ of Kirkmau anoDonison, jewellers, for about 12 years, and had left their employ just before ho enlisted with the mam Expeditioua; Sj Forco. A brother, Reg. Heald, is fighting at tho Dardanelles.
