RUMOUR AND THE SPINSTERS' CLUB

Tli© following letter has been received by the secretary of the Spinsters' Club in reply to inquiries which it had made as to whether there ivas any truth in the rumours that were circulating tothe effect that the Hutt River was afloat with .balaclavas and socks for which the soldiers in camp had no use. The Spinsters' Ciub, it must be mentioned, has done splendid work in providing socks, balaclavas, and comforts of many kinds to the men who have been in Samoa, who are now at the front, and who are also at the present time in oamp at Trentiham. Unfortunately the rumours had been having a bad effect upon some knitters, who had retired from active service on that account. The letter is as follows:— "We have read and .given great consideration to your letter addressed to the Camp Commandant, dated the 21st ult., and to which we are directed to reply.. • "Wo can, only say,as has often been said before, that Dame Rumour is not quite as truthful as George Washington. In fact, socks and balaclava, caps are of great , service to the men, and are greatly 'appreciated. Through much drill, physical and manual, socks are subject to great wear and tear, and it may be when men go down to'bathing and clothes washing parade some may be discarded .or get washed away, but as for hundreds being found in the River Hutt, we can only say reports speak falsely. Exaggeration comes easy to the 'man in the streot' at a time when economy is an essential duty for us all." The work of the Spinsters' Club is of such value' to the. men at . the present time that it seems criminal for anyone to disparage it. We trust this denial will satisfy all engaged in such general and useful work. —We are, dear ■Madam, • yours faithfully. (Signed) Captain Caiiip Q.M." 1
