RACING IN WAR TIME.
j Sir,f-Is. it not time a strong protest •was made against. the action, vof the racing clubs in .continuing..'-to hold their meetings 'at the > present ' time? We laiow the weak-arguments ' which . are used—that men will be put. out of work, etc.. But every, man could got work, either by - going to the. front,- or by talrihg the place in the country of those who . have rgone. It is almost incredible that in the midst'of this, awful war 'thousands of ; hieii and womenshould bp found flocking. to raco. meetings' 'to' gamble. It only shows' how - little 1 .we; realise the terriblo nature, of tlie .conflict. Surely every wpman .who goes to races Mow should : bo crowned- ; with ;shame, when she thinks of what her sisters in Belgium have suffered, arid what hor sisters in England will suffer, if we are, beaten:. And-why?. Oh, why? should wo give up our loved sous, so that these utterly ;■ selfish ; alnd. callous. peop}o, should stay at.'home and have !•''racing as usual,", "pleasure'as'.usual." One of Lord Roberts's last admonitions was:• "This is,no time-for sport.'.';-The Bishop ;of London, after spending eight days''witE our. troops "along -fclie • battle-' line,' wrote / to a .London; paper: "One experienced' general >■ asked; me' when the nation was going to "begin to make war.'"- Another said.the whole .nation must be "mobilised''', unlesp this : watwas to drag.on'.for years. .'The language of: another' on "racing", was lucid..' Comment is; needless .—I am, etc., A. MOTHER,
