QUEEN CARNIVAL AND PETONE.
: -Sir,—While, accepting your assurance that the 'term "horde,"-; as applied in your report; of last' Saturday's procession,, was not used ill. an. offensive' sense,' and _ gratefully acknowledging your recognition,.though somewhat belated, that tlie'ro is.;,-'a place named Petohe, and that the residents thereof did hold up their end' of the effort in aid of-the fund for killed; and wounded soldiers,-please allow mo to differ with your correspondent "Hutt . Valley." ■Neither; "Webster"' nor the "Atlas" Dictionaries define; "horde" as meaning a hurdlo. It' is; true" that \.. Webster, ■under.the heading of "Hurdle," : gives the Diitclv 'spelling.; as "horde," but as we are ; using English' meanings, to say because tho .'Dutch spell the English word hurdle, "horde," that "horde", according to! Webster means a hurdle'is riot only incorrect, but absurd. If, say, tlie Wellington Racing Club, requiring 100 hurdles,'posted an order for 100 hordes, the receiver of tlie'order would probably imagine that, the W.R.C. had got tho measles. Possibly the recollection' of a broken spring, alleged to have come to grief over tho so-called hurdles on the Petono section of the Hutt Read,--had. more to do with the appearance 'of "Hutt Valley" in - print than, any legitimate desire to protect, your .journal" from the aspersions of the Petone Council.—-I am, etc., ' ' ; JOSEPH PIPER, Potone, July. 1.
