Coopor, S,M,, presided 6 vera a sit ting of the' Magistrate's Cbui't yesterday. : . ~ , ' Thomas Stevens was charged .with behaving in a'violent aiid offensive manner in a railway carnage. : The evidenco showed that another vouug man concerned ,iii': the "oasft, Louis Judd, ,-was seated in; a: carriage, . when Stevens .entered and used insulting lan-guage-to him. Tho affair arose out of previous bickerings between defendant and Judd. The Magistrate remarked that , it' was apparent that defendant had . received sonio provocation some days, before the incident in-the carriage. In view of 'this the fine would not be so heavy. . Defendant was fined 405., with costs £1 4s. Mr. F, W. Dickson appeared for Stevens.
Application- was made against L. Restaux by Jo'lm Johnson for sureties of the peace.' Mr. T. Neave appeared for tlie applicant, and Mr. P. W, Jackson for 'defendant. After tearing the ovidenco the Magistrate remarked that as defendant had sworn that he would not molest .complainant again lie would dismiss the case. Costs .£l. Bs. . were ■allowed complainant. i Two' seamen'off the "Kia Ora," Fredcrick \Varuer and James Norton,'were remanded to July 5 on charges of'absentingi themselves without .leave from that/vessel- ' . For indecency in Lanibton Quay, Williahi, M'Donnell was fined: £3, with the •alternative of one -month's imprisonment;": v -' .- - ; A sentence of one month's imprisonment- wits imposed on Robert Henry Dovoiipor't, charged with being idle arid .disorderly in that he was found begging in-Lambton Quay. , May Wills was further remanded to July' 9 on a charge of escaping from .the Salvation Army Home. For drunkenness, Cornelius Donaghuo fined 10s,, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Eight first-offen,ding inebriates vwero dealt with, ' BY-LAW CASES. ' A. Daviesvwas fined 55,, with'costs 155,, for failing tokeep on his proper aidp, when driving in Constable Street. Oil -each of four charges of allowing live stock to ivandor at.Miramar, Davies was'fined, 10s„ with costs totalling £1 1-ls. . /• <, : . For breaches of the City veliicular by-laws, Leslie M'Pike". was fined 205., With costs 7s.y while Dr. Cameron, Alexander' Proctor, Patrick Daloy, James Fyife, James /'Proctor, and Alexander Pringle Smith wero each fined 55., with costs 7s. George Alfred Hurley was fined 55., with <;osts 75., on each of two charges'. of committing breaches of tho motor by-laws. Tiwmas P. T. Tl.
