PATRIOTIC SOCIETY'S MONEY

HOW IT IS TO BE ALLOCATED. In the glamour and excitement naturally attendant on the biggest and most successful carnival ever held in Wellington, there are those who omit to remember that the whole of the money that is being so generously subscribed by the public is not to be earmarked for the wounded soldiers and sailors and their dependents. The resolutions passed at the meeting of the executive of the society held on Slay 10, so far as the destiny of the funds is concerned, were as follow: — "(I) That 75 per cent, of the money subscribed be devoted to the relief of New Zealand soldiers, and sailors incapacitated as the result of injuries received on active service, and the dependents of New- Zealand soldiers and sailors who lost their lives whilst .on active service. "(2) Of the remaining 25 per cent, part to be handed over to the St. John Ambulance Association for the purpose of providing medical equipment, etc., for our troops at tin? front and for comforts for returned soldiers and sailors during convalescence." The latter resolution is not juite so clear in its intention as it might be, but it was intended (says Mr. Colley) that the amount collected should he divided into two parts—one to be a fund for the relief of soldiers and sailors and their dependents (if in need) and the other 25 per cent, to be used for ambulance purposes as indicated. Though it is not stated so, it is assumed that the word "part" after the words "of the remaining 25 per cent." may be a safeguard in case any urgent need cropped up in the meantime. The carnival expenses would be deducted from the gross amount.
