SUGAR SUPPLIES

"REMARKABLY GOOD BARGAIN" ■ MAXIMUM PRICE £21 i The certainty that we shall haveadequate supplies of sugar in the Dominion lor tho next twelve months is apparent from the following paragraph in the of the Foodstuffs Commission, presented to Parliament yesterday:— "As regards sugar, the markets of the world became very disturbed in the early months of the war, and in London sugar was quoted as high as £33 per ton. 'The Colonial Sugar Refining Company continued to supply norriial orders at £16 ss. One of their agents from Australia gave evidence before the Foodstuffs Commissioners, and an arrangement was subsequently made with him to supply our requirements up to June 30 last at a maximum x>rice of £20 per ton, the existing arrangements as to supplying manufacturers at £14 per ton being undisturbed— the maximum to be reached by several increases of not more than £1 per toil au intervals of not less than two weeks. The maximum was reached in December last. This arrangement gave New Zealand an abundant supply of sugar of the best quality, at a lower price than any other country has enjoyed. The commission recently renewed the arrangement with the company for a further period of one year at a maximum price of" £21 per ton, which should, having regard to high prices oJsewliere, be regarded as highly satisfactory." "I am given to understand," said the Prime .Minister, referring to this subject last night, "that the price of sugar is £25 per ton in bond, or £31 <iuty paid. The London prico is £27 10s. per ten, and the price in Now York is about the same. I think our bargain with the Colonial Sugar Company is a remarkably good one."
